Divorce is a HELLUVA LOT cheaper!
Jordan Graham never heard the joke—why is divorce so expensive? Because it’s worth it! Jordan’s failure to appreciate this nuance will cost her dearly. About 2 months ago, I blogged about Jordan’s plight in a blog titled: “Don’t get mad, get even!” For those who don’t remember, here are the operative facts: Jordan Graham and Cody Johnson had been married for seven days when they visited Glacier National Park on their honeymoon. After an argument, the newlyweds went for a hike. For Jordan, the trip was a round-trip voyage whereas for Cody, it was a one-way trip resulting him falling hundreds of feet to his death.
Jordan’s trial began on December 9th; the government put on its evidence (including Jordan’s text messages to a friend bemoaning her decision to marry Cody and one where she stated—“But dead serious. If you don’t hear from me at all again tonight, something happened”); and Jordan put on some evidence, but didn’t testify. Before her case was argued to the jury, Jordan cut a deal and pled guilty to second degree murder.
At her guilty plea hearing, Jordan told the presiding district court judge that she told Cody she wasn’t happy and wasn’t feeling like she should after getting married. She said they argued and at one point Cody grabbed her by the arm. Jordan said she brushed his hand away and pushed him, with one hand on his arm and one on his back. “I wasn’t thinking about where we were… I just pushed.” After pushing Cody off the cliff and he tumbled to his death, she drove back to Kalispell, Montana without calling for help because she did not know what to do.
This lapse in judgment will likely cost Jordan dearly as the statutory maximum sentence is life imprisonment and her guideline sentencing range will be 20 to 25 years.
