MARTIN SHEEN SUPPORTS SMARTER SENTENCING ACT (SSA)
By now, you’ve seen several blogs about the SSA, which is legislation
that is pending (dying??) in Congress that if enacted would lower mandatory
minimum penalties in drug offenses, would apply the 2010 statutory penalties
to crack offenses sentenced before August 3, 2010, and would enable district
court judges to avoid the traps of mandatory minimums in certain cases.
Right now, the SSA has bipartisan support as well as support from Attorney
General Holder but isn’t galloping through Congress towards a meaningful vote.
In steps Martin Sheen who is now a strong supporter of the SSA, in conjunction
with FAMM. Sheen hasgone so far as reprising his role as President Bartlet
to lobby for SSA’s passage. As most know, Sheen is a devout supporter
of sentencing reform. Let’s hope President Bartlet’s support
will be the nudge to get this legislation back on track!
